The present structure of Vishnupad Mandir, located on the banks of the river Falgu in Gaya, Bihar, India was rebuilt by Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar, the ruler of Indore, in 1787 on the banks of the river Falgu. This is the place where the footprint of Lord Vishnu himself is present, it was formed when once a demon named Gayasur performed severe penance and asked for a boon that whoever visits him will get salvation. Since salvation is attained by being righteous in life, people started attaining it easily. To prevent immoral people from attaining salvation, Vishnu asked Gayasur to go below the earth and did so by placing his right foot on the head of the demon. And then after Gayasur was pushed below the surface of the earth, Vishnu's footprint remained on the surface which we see even today. The footprint has nine different symbols including Shankham, Chakram and Gadham. These are believed to be the weapons of the Lord. Now pushed into the earth, Gayasur started pleading for food. Vishnu gave him a boon that every day someone will give him food. Whoever does this, his soul will reach heaven. Since then it is also believed that any devotee who participates in the worship of Vishnu Ji in Vishnupad temple, his Pitra Dosh is removed and the soul of the ancestors gets peace. People from different parts of India pray here for the welfare of their departed souls. It is also believed that Shri Ram worshipped Vishnu Ji here for the peace of the soul of his father Raja Dasharath
