This Kshetra near Nashik is considered to be one of the most sacred places due to the country's most revered, Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga. The very famous Godavari river which is also popularly known as Dakshin Ganga originates from this Kshetra. It is believed that Godavari River originated due to the intense penance of Rishi Gautam. It is mentioned in Shiv Purana that on the prayer and request of Gautam Rishi, Godavari and all the other Gods, Lord Shiva decided to reside in this place, hence it became famous by the name of Trimbakeshwar.
