Kalighat was a Ghat sacred to Maa Kali on the old course of the Hooghly river or Bhagirathi. Shaktipeeth Kalighat Temple at Kalighat in Kolkata is one of the most revered Maa Kali Temples in the Indian sub-continent. The name Kolkata is derived from the Kalikata Devi of Kalighat Temple. It is believed that the fingers of the right foot of Maa Sati had fallen here. In the temple premises, Kundupukur is located, which is a pond. The right thumb of Maa Sati was found in this pond.
