Haridwar is one of the seven holy places, Sapta Puris for Hindus. Haridwar means the gate of Hari or Shri Vishnu. To visit the pilgrimage places such as Badrinath and Kedarnath, Devotees need to go via Haridwar. According to ancient scriptures, a few drops of Amrit or nectar fell at four different places of Earth from the Amrit Kalash that came out during the Samudra Manthan and Haridwar is one of them. The famous Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar is the Ghat on the baks of Ganga, where the drop of nectar fell. The name 'Haridwar' was mentioned for the first time in Padma Purana. Hindus believe that by taking a bath in the holy river Ganga here, the sins of this life and past life are resolved. Participating in Charity, Puja, Offerings and Katha on auspicious days at Haridwar gives fruitful results for lifetime.
