Haridwar is one of the seven holy places of Hindus. Haridwar means the gate of Hari or Shri Vishnu. To visit the pilgrimage places such as Badrinath and Kedarnath, Devotees need to go through Haridwar. According to ancient scriptures, a few drops of Amrita or nectar fell at four different places of Earth from the pot of Amrit that came out during the Samudra Manthan and Haridwar is one of them. The famous Ghat Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar is the place where the drop of nectar fell. The name 'Haridwar' was used for the first time in Padma Purana. Hindus believe that by taking a bath in the holy river, the sins of this life and past life are resolved. Charity done on auspicious days at this place gives fruitful results for lifetime.
