Varanasi or Banaras has been known as Kashi in Puranas. It is the oldest surviving city in the world and sacred for Hinduism and Buddhism. One can also find the reference of Kashi in the oldest Hindu Scripture Rigveda. Kashi is considered as the place where souls liberate and attain Moksha. After Kailash, Kashi is considered to be the abode of Lord Shiva. It is believed that Lord Shiva also got freed from the sin here of killing a Brahman. Jyotirlinga Kashi Vishwanath is also located here. It is believed that even Shri Vishnu came to Kashi to worship Lord Shiva. It is believed that even Buddha preached his first sermon in Sarnath near Kashi. Papmochani Maa Ganga also sanctifies this place.
